Trustworthy AI Products Need Recovery Paths
Trust comes less from the best answer than from what the system does when it is unsure.
One of the easier ways to fool yourself in AI product work is to spend too much time on the best-case demo.
The happy path matters. Of course it does. If the product cannot do anything useful when conditions are favorable, there is nothing to build on. But a lot of AI products win attention on the happy path and lose trust everywhere else.
That is usually because the recovery model is weak.
What happens when the model is unsure.
What happens when the tool call fails.
What happens when the retrieved context is incomplete.
What happens when the system can continue, but should probably stop and ask for confirmation.
Those moments shape trust much more than one especially clever answer.
I think this is one reason AI products look deceptively strong early on. A polished demo can hide how much product work is still unresolved. The model seems smart enough that teams skip past questions they would never skip in a normal workflow product. What is the handoff. What is the fallback. What gets logged. What becomes visible to the user. What is safe to retry automatically. Where does a human step in.
That is not just implementation detail. That is the product.
The AI systems I find most convincing are not the ones that always look magical. They are the ones that stay legible after something goes sideways.
A trustworthy AI product should make failure feel navigable, not mysterious.
